How to Choose the Right Shipping Container Size

Shipping containers come in a handful of standard lengths — 10ft, 20ft, 40ft, 45ft, 48ft, and 53ft — and picking the right one comes down to what you're storing, where it's going, and how you plan to move it later.

For general backyard or job-site storage, a 20ft container is the most popular starting point. It holds roughly 1,170 cubic feet, fits through most standard gate openings, and is still light enough to move with a basic tilt-bed trailer if you ever need to relocate it.

If you need more room without a larger footprint, a high cube version of the same length adds a foot of extra height, which adds up to noticeably more vertical storage for bulky or oddly shaped items.

Larger projects — multi-room container homes, retail buildouts, or high-volume equipment storage — usually call for 40ft or longer units, sometimes combined side by side. Keep in mind that longer containers are harder to reposition once placed, so site access and crane clearance matter more as you go up in size.

Whatever size you land on, get exact interior dimensions and door swing clearance from your supplier before finalizing a delivery date — it's the single most common mistake first-time buyers make.
